To illustrate the thesis that "commuting is the single most anti-productive thing we do" Alvin Toffler) they tell an anecdote that puts commuting in perspective: An eleven year old boy sat at his father's home computer the other day working jointly on a term paper with a friend across town. The speaker phone was on, the fax machine was humming, books were open on the floor, and the computer mouse was flying. The two boys didn't know it but they were "telecommuting" to jointly write their paper. Now imagine the response, in ten years' time, when these boys are being interviewed for their first job at a company that does not allow telecommuting -- "You want me to get on the freeway at the same time as everyone else and sit in traffic for an hour so we can work in an office that costs $6,000 per year? Why?"

Telecommuting in Massachusetts: A Synopsis of the Massachusetts Telecommuting Initiative by Paul C. Boyd (MCK Communications). During 1994 the Massachusetts Division of Energy Resources and the Massachusetts Highway Department undertook a project to study the impacts of telecommuting on the Commonwealth. The project became known as the Massachusetts Telecommuting Initiative. This research was conducted with the participation of over 300 respondents from 51 employers. The conclusions drawn from this research reveal a number of arguments that support and promote the use of telecommuting.
